The Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York (“WBASNY”) will be “Building Houses Building Hope” on April 1, 2017 in Orange County, and we are inviting members from chapters across the state to join us. “Build Day” with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh is being hosted by the Women’s Bar Association of Orange and Sullivan Counties (WBAOSC) and the Rockland County Women’s Bar Association. Space is limited to about 30 members on the build site, and reservations will be required one week prior.

Saturday, April 1, 2017
Location: Newburgh, NY

Friday Evening Schedule:

On March 31, 2017, WBASNY members can travel to Newburgh by car, train or bus, and should plan to arrive by 6:30 p.m. Then, they will be met by WBAOSC members who will transport them to the location for a cocktail hour and dinner. Zipcar and taxi service are available at the Beacon train station on the Metro North line and at the Poughkeepsie train station on Amtrak.

Accommodations Friday Night:

Members of WBAOSC are opening their homes to those who would like to stay in a home environment. Members can also make their own hotel reservations. Information and pricing for recommended hotels will be provided.

Saturday Build Day:

The Build Day takes place from 8:00 a.m. until about noon on April 1, 2017. WBAOSC members will arrive at a recommended hotel at 7:30 a.m. to take WBASNY members to the Build Site in Newburgh. Coffee, pastries and fruit will be available at the site. Habitat will provide all tools and supervised instruction. All attendees will receive a Habitat T-Shirt.  PARTICPANTS MUST DRESS IN CLOTHING THAT CAN BE RUINED. For example, participants may be painting; the actual tasks will not be known until that week. It is recommended that participants bring gloves and a hat/baseball cap and wear old sneakers or sturdy shoes. There will be a communal break at 10:00 a.m., during which all persons building on all open build sites will gather for quick refreshments.  Atnoon, when the Build Day ends, WBASNY members will meet at Habitat Headquarters in Newburgh for a light lunch and short program/tour.

After the Build Day:

After the tour, WBAOSC members will take participants back to their hotels/guest homes to clean up, pack and prepare to travel home or continue their visit. Transportation to the Poughkeepsie and Beacon train stations for select trains will be available from WBAOSC Members. For those interested in staying to explore on their own, the Newburgh Brewing Company, Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site, and the Anne Street Gallery are all within walking distance of Habitat Headquarters. For more adventure, members may visit Eleanor Roosevelt’s Val-Kill Estate and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park. For a side trip near the Beacon train station, members can visit the world-renowned Dia Museum and the many shops and restaurants of Main Street, Beacon.
